Inspiring Models at Cabin Fever Live Steam

The 2020 Cabin Fever Expo held in Lebanon, PA., this past January is now "in the books." As always, there was so much inspiring model engineering work on display, it really takes two days to see it all. Here are some photos of models that caught my eye this year.

The Gauge-One enthusiasts had a couple of portable tracks set up. This live steam East Broad Top 2-8-2 caught my eye. After the recent announcement of the rebirth of the real EBT, it seems appropriate to include this photo here.

Mike "Sid" Pileski had a table full of fascinating stationary engine in operation. His designs are quite unique, and the quality of his machining and finishing is top notch. Look for an article on one of these engines in a future issue of Live Steam & Outdoor Railroading.

John Hudak from Ohio is a terrific model maker. He brought his 3/4″-scale B&O Docksider to wow the onlookers. Even though this 0-4-0T is still under construction, close scrutiny reveals a ton of scratch-made details.

The theme of Cabin Fever this year was "Kozo’s Influence." This display shows how a modeler is using Kozo’s techniques for building locomotive drivers without castings.

This beautiful display features two models: an 1898 Nash gas engine powering a logging winch. These recently completed works of mechanical art were built by C. Roemmich.

Model engineering shows are enjoyable events, and the fantastic work of others can serve to kick-start our own projects in the home shop. The annual NAMES show is fast approaching – it will be held April 25-26 in Wyandotte, Michigan. I hope to see you there.
