The March/April 2020 Issue of Live Steam
While Live Steam & Outdoor Railroading often focuses on North American subjects, we welcome quality material from anywhere. Canadian J.J. Paques gives us a tour of the live steam clubs of France, and shows us many fine models that exemplify true craftsmanship, including the steam locomotive featured on the cover and the diesel pictured below.

Another example of great model engineering is the 1/5-scale Hornsby Steam Crawler owned and described by Jay Wolkowisky. The prototype, built in the U.K., was the forerunner to the world-famous Caterpillar crawler.

Joe Farrow returns to finish his description of the methods developed by the Yuma Territory Live Steamers for the construction of 7.5″ gauge switches. Also, author Chris Rueby begins building the boiler for the Lombard Hauler. His innovative techniques will be useful for anyone in need of a small copper boiler.

Our master of fabrication, Kozo Hiraoka, creates detailed piping for the Rio Grande K-27 in Part 33B of his saga, and he also shows us how to make a very useful tool for turning small bar stock in the lathe.

In addition, Kozo has a stand-alone article, one that I think is quite important to the steam locomotive builder. He teaches us how to lay out an "oblique conical shell," which is that tricky transition piece of boiler jacket that joins a larger diameter jacket to a smaller one. This is often done by trial and error, and a lot of guesswork. But, by using Kozo’s formulas, a precise part can be designed for any size boiler.

Finally, there are four great photos on the Reader’s Photo Page, along with the 2019 Article Index, Special Events, and a News release. Please check out the new issue of LSOR – it has much to offer the model engineer.
